14 - 16.06.2012 Head of the city of Izhevsk took part in the WHO Healthy Cities Conference

From 14 to 16 of June, 2012 the Annual Business and Technical Conference of the WHO European Healthy Cities Network and Network of European National Healthy Cities Networks took place in Saint Petersburg. The announced theme of the Conference was “Health and well-being: from an early start in life to healthy ageing”.

365 delegates presenting 26 counties along with 12 WHO experts and 6 representatives of centers collaborating with WHO became participants of the forum.

During the Conference Izhevsk was presented by the Head of the city of Izhevsk, Chairman of the WHO Healthy Cities Steering Committee in Izhevsk Alexander Ushakov (head of the delegation); Deputy head of the Izhevsk City Administration on social policy, Deputy chairperson of the WHO Healthy Cities Steering Committee in Izhevsk Irina Tesleva; Head of the Department for preventive measures and citizens’ health protection of the Izhevsk City Administration Lyubov Kasenkova; Healthy Cities Project Coordinator in Izhevsk Nina Zagrebina.

During the forum significant political and strategic decisions concerning public health management on local, national and European levels were made, practical experience of various cities was analyzed.

One of the principle themes of the Conference was discussion upon the document “Health – 2020. New European policy for health and well-being” that would become fundamental document for public health development till 2020 for WHO and European governments. This document will be signed during the next Assembly of the WHO Regional bureau in September, 2012.

Besides that, the Conference was marked by various thematic sessions, presentations, round tables and plenary meetings where world-known experts, heads of cities and politicians of different levels took part. Among questions that were arisen during the Conference were ones of the significant current importance, such as investing in health throughout the lifespan, innovative and inclusive programmes to champion and support the health and well-being of vulnerable groups, comprehensive approaches to whole-city healthy urban planning and design, collaborative city approaches to tackling drugs and alcohol with young people, prevention of noncommunicable diseases, etc.
